Acoustic Breakdown Gone Country

by Hannah Dudley

Country Music: A way of life to many but completely underrated in the UK. I'm going to help change that here as I review and introduce country classics old and new, filtering the trite from the truly brilliant and dispelling your notions that country is corny. A lot of it is, but even then it can be great.

New post theme: SONG OF NOW!

Okay, I was flicking through my mp3 player's vast music directory the other day and I found myself rediscovering songs that made me fall in love with a group, OR, songs that are possibly the only ones by that band that I know/like. You know what I mean, that one song you hear on a TV episode in the background or something, that really stops you short and leads you fast over to various websites to find out who sang it, where it's from etc. Possibly no one else has ever heard of them - you find yourself going on about some amazing track that everyone else missed.

Well, being a fan of shows that do about 20 different 'great' songs per episode, I have many, many to choose from. So here we go, a new theme for my blog to divulge some of those amazing tracks that at one time or other were my 'song of now'.

Providing two tracks per post, the first I shall start with is truly amazing and actually led me to become a huuuge fan of the band and their entire back catalogue! Played on an episode of Roswell, Season One (I believe the episode's called 'The White Room')...now boys, don't let that put you off ;o)...the band is Remy Zero (SERIOUSLY check them out if you haven't as yet) and the song's called 'Yellow Light', from the album Villa Elaine. A bone chillingly glorious guitar track with soaring lead vocals.

The band's second album, The Golden Hum:

Second track is in a slightly different vein, by Australian counry-pop artist Kasey Chambers. The song is 'Nullarbor Song' which, again, featured on Roswell. People might knock that show but it had one hell of a soundtrack! From the album Barricades and Brickwalls.

Carrie Underwood - Check Out Her Hot Country Sound!

Hello everyone...

Yet again, I apologise for the lack of updates. Life is ridiculously stressful/busy/complicated at the moment with job searches, house searches and dissertation research piling up and up and up...

But i've finally found the opportunity to tell you about my latest 'obsession' album, that I simply can't stop playing! It's Carrie Underwood's Some Hearts. Over-flowing with catchy country-infused pop tunes, tales of heart ache and real country-style musings, this is the perfect summer album to carry you through Fall and Winter too! Winner of American Idol in 2005, this girl is much more than some manipulated music industry barbie doll. Listen to it in your car - preferably whilst driving down i90 or a similar picturesque 'Midwest' route - or anywhere you fancy...personally I listen to it on the way to and from work and on my breaks, as it helps lift me from the depression caused by my crappy job!!!!!

Opening track 'Wasted' makes you want to get up and really do something great with your life and hope for days of a better job, a nicer home but more importantly, feeling HAPPY AND SATISFIED with life.

First single 'Jesus Take The Wheel' is a brilliantly-written country-pop song, telling a tale of a single mom driving home to see her family, struggling to retain control of her life and car and ultimately asking Jesus for help! No, it's not a preachy/conversion style religious declaration, it's just about feeling totally dejected and asking someone for help (God if you wish!).

Then there's the sassy, grinding stomper 'Before He Cheats', which has the classic line: "Right now she's probably on stage singing a white-trash version of Shania karaokee"! Love it!! It's quite Avril/Alanis-esque, as Carrie sings of scratching her name into the side of her cheating lover's "suped up four wheel drive" to make him think before he cheats again!

'Night Before Life Goes On' will have relevance to all who've been forced to leave behind friends/lovers/family/hometowns, as part of that thing called 'growing up'. In the song a girl is 18 and heading to Louisiana State University whilst her boyfriend has to stay behind in their little town, with a crappy job and little to look forward to. Sounds like a downer but like true country, it'll have you rocking and swaying to its soaring melodies and catchy hooks.

The two best tracks are probably 'Don't Forget To Remember Me', which has classic country lyrics about highways, gasoline and bibles (!), whilst 'I Ain't In Checotah Anymore' is my personal favourite. It's a true tale of leaving the small town roots and moving to the big city and the shocks and changes this brings. Best line:

"My hotel in Manhattan holds more people than our town,
And what I just paid for dinner would be a down payment on a house
I'd rather be tipping cows in Tulsa than hailing cabs here in New York
But I ain't in Checotah anymore".

Here is a selection of the best tracks but honestly, the whole album pretty much rocks, with only a couple of weaker tracks. Particularly if you've followed my previous recommendations and are fans of The Wreckers, The Dixie Chicks, possibly Faith Hill or Jewel, you'll LOVE it!
